REDWOOD CURTAIN COPWATCH
KEEPING AN EYE ON POLICE ABUSE IN THE EMERALD TRIANGLE
“Redwood Curtain CopWatch, based in the north coast of California, is part of a larger movement of self organized CopWatch groups throughout the US. Our local efforts seek to intervene in the drastic rise of the presence, militarization, and violence of the police, and build support networks based on self-determination, caring, and concrete needs.”
What we do
We work to counter police brutality by WATCHING the cops in the streets, supporting survivors and their families, and exploring radically different ways for our communities to organize ourselves. Our work involves documenting peoples’ experiences with police, engaging in direct action demonstrations, supporting people caught in the (in)justice system, creating and disseminating literature exposing the truth about harmful incidents and trends, and convening community spaces to gather and share information. We organize through sharing stories, strategies of survival and resistance; networking; and building relationships necessary to support and understand each other- recognizing that we must learn from the most oppressed people and communities amongst us. We seek to promote community empowerment that explores true conflict resolution and builds community support and protection- without the police- in a variety of creative ways.
CopWatching
In CopWatch Patrols, we are in the streets, WATCHING THE COPS, making sure they know that the PEOPLE care and will hold them accountable for their behavior.
Creating Support Networks
Help us create SUPPORT NETWORKS of community options for people when they believe they’re in danger, need emotional or mental health support, are being harassed, have problems in their neighborhoods or homes, or have fear due to their immigration status.
Documenting Abuse
COPWATCH INVITES YOUR STORIES so we can support individuals & families who have been brutalized, harassed and/or murdered by police and so that we can maintain a public history log of specific abusive cop activity

CALL FOR CORONER’S INQUESTS! REGARDING DEATHS IN 2007 of Peter Stewart, Martin Cotton, and James “Hans” Peters
Posted June 19th, 2008 by copwatch
The Humboldt County Coroner, District Attorney, and Sheriff, and the Eureka police chief and Eureka city attorney have been, at best, negligent, and at worst, corrupt, in their failure to call for coroner’s inquests regarding the deaths of Peter Stewart, Martin “Fred” Cotton, and James “Hans” Peters.
These three young men died within 3 months of each other in “unexplained and violent deaths” in the custody of and during interactions with law enforcement in Eureka and Humboldt County.

COPWATCH: MORE THAN JUST WATCHING THE POLICE

COPWATCH: MORE THAN JUST WATCHING THE POLICE.
We formed Redwood Curtain CopWatch, outraged about excessive police force,
EPD killings, and the harassing and brutal role that police have in and
against our communities. We’ve been sharing strategies of survival,
witnessing, and resistance to police brutality and transformative
community actions with CopWatch groups throughout the country.
Redwood Curtain CopWatch NOT ONLY documents oppressive, abusive police
activity…
WEAPONS
Posted April 21st, 2008 by copwatch
Assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons are being supplied by a large corporation (Target) and the DA.
TAZERS
Tazers give off a 50,000 volt blast. EPD is expecting to have a new batch of tazers soon. The body count in North America now stands at 287 after having been tasered with this “less than lethal” device. 15 Canadians and 272 Americans since 2001, 9 dead in August of this year alone.

Reclaim your community! Terry Liles, the officer who shot 16 year-old Chris Burgess, is back on the beat before his victim’s body has left the morgue.
Time for sufficient treatment and rehab for the shooter has not passed and the community is not safe with this man toting a gun again.
In addition, violations of police procedures, such as pursuing a suspect without backup, the documented previous beating by Liles of the victim, and questions of why non-lethal force was not used should be further pursued.
Policies that allow excessive police violence to continue without accountability or structural changes to prevent such violence must be challenged. In some countries the police don’t even carry guns.
If you support creating a safe community, please call the Humboldt D.A. Paul Gallegos to encourage further investigation into this killing and the murder of Cheri Moore (ALSO INVOLVING LILES) mere months ago. (707)445-7411
Call interim Eureka Police Chief Capt. Murl Harpham and ask that Terry Liles be taken off the streets. (707) 441-4060.
